Lyrics
Mighty River
Old Ben was walking down the street preaching the Rights of Man
He said “it’s plain ol’ common sense don’t y’all understand?”
The Senator didn’t like that and he got paranoid, and said
“If everybody thinks this way I’ll be unemployed!”
Ben was a crazy bastard but he weren’t no fool
I guess he learned the hard way about the golden rule
When he hopped a train and headed down to Jackson, Tennessee
And he found himself a home on the shores of Galilee
Won’t you meet me on the banks of the mighty river
I’m looking for a friend to take me home
Reach out your hand I need it more than ever
I’ll be here watching that river flow
Hannah heard the lesson, and said “We leave tonight, and
“We’ll see the land of milk and honey by the morning light.”
But just across the border they stopped her in the street, saying
"We got wives and children and they all got to eat”
Won’t you meet me on the banks of the mighty river
I’m looking for a friend to take me home
Reach out your hand I need it more than ever
I’ll be here watching that river flow
Take me to the promised land, I’m tired of all this dust
I tried to play my guitar but the strings have turned to rust
Everything that’s here falls apart in the end
But when Ben gets to preachin’ I know I’ve got a friend
Won’t you meet me on the banks of the mighty river
I’m looking for a friend to take me home
Reach out your hand I need it more than ever
I’ll be here watching that river flow
